Serverless workloads: execution identity and event trust
A serverless function has a deployment artifact, execution identity, environment, triggers, and event payload.
Also known as: Lambda · function identity
Mechanism
A serverless function has a deployment artifact, execution identity, environment, triggers, and event payload. User-controlled event data can cross into file operations, queries, or downstream API calls under the function identity. A permissive trigger policy and an overprivileged execution role are separate issues that can combine.
Practical method
Map trigger source, event schema, function configuration, and execution role. Trace event fields into sensitive operations. Check retry and concurrency behavior when testing state changes. Use a local or dedicated lab event to verify one data path and one permission boundary.
external event -> parser -> function code -> execution-role API call
input trust delegated authority
Interpreting evidence
A successful invocation proves trigger access, not every downstream permission. Identify the role action and the exact event field that influences it.
Pitfalls and limits
Retries can repeat nonidempotent changes. Environment variables are configuration, not a secret-management guarantee. Warm execution environments may retain state between invocations.
